CWM response to Nuclear Power Plant Water Discharge

Dear Esteemed Colleagues,

Warmest greetings from the Council for World Mission!

I trust this letter finds you well and steadfast in your commitment to justice, compassion, and the care of God’s creation. I am sending this letter to share with you the CWM Statement on the release of radioactive water from the Fukushima nuclear plant into the Pacific Ocean.

The recent decision by the Japanese government, upon the approval of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), to discharge nuclear wastewater from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant into the Pacific Ocean has raised great concerns among the members of the CWM. The potential environmental, social, and ethical implications of this action are significant, prompting us to issue a public statement condemning the irresponsible act of the Japanese Government and the IAEA.

The statement reflects our conviction that as stewards of God’s creation, we are called to act with responsibility and compassion toward all living beings and the ecosystems that sustain them. Please find the statement attached.

We invite you to join us in prayers and solidarity in urging the decision-makers to consider alternative solutions that uphold our responsibility as stewards of God’s creation, protect the livelihoods of our neighbours, and honour God’s call to love and care for all that God has made.

May the grace of God empower us as we strive to advocate for responsible actions that safeguard our planet and be faithful stewards.

Yours in God’s Mission,

Rev. Dr Jooseop Keum
General Secretary
