Roxton Congregational Church

Roxton Congregational Church

I left a blustery wet Autumnal day in Liverpool to enjoy a blue sky and sunshine Autumnal day at Roxton Congregational Church.

After years of fundraising, prayers and sleepless nights it was time to celebrate and give thanks to God for a new thatched roof at the church. Work started in March and was completed in September. The largest grant came from the Heritage Lottery Fund, but to obtain that there had to be parallel
funding from other grant agencies. They had many donations from East Midlands Congregational Churches, private donors and our own reserves which made up the total of £108,000 that was required. Thank you to all.

The church was full to bursting at the celebration with celebratory guest Deputy Lieutenant Robert Lovesey and his wife Ann who stepped in last minute after their local MP Rt Hon Alistair Burt was called to Parliament! It was also wonderful that so many people from other local congregational churches could come support the church in true congregational style. Stella Wallace-Tween, the East Midlands chair, was there and lots of friends from Shillington, Bunyan Meeting, Elstow, Uppingham and Oakham.

I led the service with Janet Wootton, our CF President, and we said a dedication outside to the new roof proclaiming all our welcome. I couldn't resist preaching on Mark 2 - the friends who made a hole in the roof to have their paralysed friend healed by Jesus - concluding that through (maybe 'because of' is a better term) the new roof at Roxton many more people will come to meet with Jesus.

It was an uplifting and encouraging day and a pleasure to be part of. Well done to all at Roxton for their commitment, determination and faith that got them to that day.
