Continuing Ministerial Development

I referred to this initiative at the national Assembly in June and put an article in The Congregationalist. I am pleased to say that a number of people have already been in touch with me about following up on this, and I want to encourage those in ministry to consider getting in touch with me.

Let me share two things. First of all, some of us in ministry may be experiencing something of the strain of constantly being expected to give to others, in all kinds of ways and at all kinds of times. This is not at all uncommon, and it should not be seen as a sign of weakness. There were times when Jesus himself felt the need to withdraw a little from public engagement. If this is the case for you, it may be that you would benefit from a listening ear who is not part of your immediate context, and from some sharing of ideas and resources for yourself as you seek fresh energy and initiative. I am very happy to help in some way if that is the case.

As part of this desire to be of help, we have produced a simple leaflet with some initial suggestions and with some ideas for further resources. It is entitled, Ministry to Yourself, and you can find it by clicking here.

Secondly, some of us may feel that what we are in need of is a new challenge, and that that would serve to energise us. It may be something biblical that you would like to get your teeth back into; or perhaps a contemporary theological or missiological issue that interests you, or that you think could have an impact on your ministry; or it may be some research with people that would fire your interest – members of your church, or ministers in the CF and beyond, or people in your community – enabling you to find out what people actually think about some matter that concerns or interests you.

If this is the case for you, then maybe we can help with providing advice, resources, a person with whom you would work through material and ideas, training in good research (e.g. how to create and use good questionnaires, interviews, surveys). With this in mind, I have prepared a simple 2-page leaflet entitled, Continuing Ministerial Development, that sets out possible ways forward, and you can find it by clicking here.

Finally, let me share a few ideas for workshop days that have been suggested to me, in each case by at least two people: different understandings of atonement that are held today; the different approaches that so many Christians take to interpreting the Bible; developing a positive approach to mission today; preaching and leading worship. There could be any number of possible areas of concern and interest.

If anything here catches your eye, either now or in the future, don’t hesitate to get in touch with me. This is an offer of support, and it will always be open.
