Founded in 2005, the project brings volunteers from throughout Europe together under one roof to share in the community of voluntary work and personal discovery.
Each and every year on 1st September the new volunteers arrive at the door of the Mission House ready to build a community together in the house. They spend 10 months working with those on the margins of society around Amsterdam.
All work and no play makes for a very unhappy volunteer and that’s why the Mission House project isn’t all about work but how the volunteer can grow in their faith, social awareness & social life. The Project is diverse, exciting and enriching.
Find out more here and discover how you can apply to join the Mission House.
The Mission of the House is where Word and action meet. This Mission isn’t individual but Community based.
The centre of Christian life is Community. Where we come together to share our gifts, where we come together to meet others, God and ourselves.
1 Timothy (6:18) asks us to “be generous and willing to share” and with each year that instruction is fulfilled in the Mission House.
Through community the Mission House brings different countries, backgrounds and cultures together for 10 months. These 10 months help plant seeds of change in the volunteer. Yet the Mission House recognises that each and every person is unique and as such so will their goals and experiences reflect this. The Mission House isn’t here to convert, nor is it here to speed up change. The Mission House is at it’s best when it’s supporting young people in exploring themselves, others & God. We give youth the chance to explore, find and cross their boarders during the year, while having first hand contact with a side of the city which often gets forgotten and ignored by society.
This Mission is made possible because of the partnership between the Mission House & The Council for World Mission Europe, Protestantse Diaconie Amsterdam, Lutherse Diaconie Amsterdam, & The Protestant Church in Amsterdam (PKA). These organisations support the house financially, with training, direction & friendly faces! The Mission House is also part of the European Voluntary Service (EVS).
As you know in pursuing one programme CWM will formally withdraw from the Mission House in June 2017 but we are still keen to promote the opportunity amongst the CWM Europe member churches and whilst the UK remains in the EU we can fund places through the European Volunteer Scheme (EVS) - who have supported the Mission House for some time.
We have received confirmation that the EU will continue to make the EVS funding available to UK participants for the Mission House coming year (from September 2017), after that who knows (!).
So please encourage any young people who might be interested in the Mission House volunteer programme
