Additional Information:

BRIEF HISTORY OF NARBOROUGH CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH

1662
Formation of church; no building existed.
People were known as nonconformists or dissenters
First leader was Matthew Clarke MA rector of the Parish Church evicted for his nonconformist stand.
These nonconformists met in the house of W Thorpe (what’s new in house church movement)?

The Robjohn Hall The Robjohn Hall

1706
Small square chapel built

1770
Church extended (bricks on extension have initials and 1771 carved on them).

1779
Minister Mr Fawcett requested a house. Manse built for about £300.00!!

1800
Sunday School formed.

The Congregation at Narborough Members of the Congregation

1860
Rev James Nelson Robjohns came to the church and served as minister for 31 years. Died 13.3.1897 aged 72 years.  His wife’s name was Mary Ann and she died 18.1.1915 aged 81 years.
Mr Caleb Kelham Robjohns (Rev Robjohns son) became a great benefactor to the church. It was due to his legacy that the Robjohn Hall was built. He died 22.9.1929 aged 72 years.

1866
Gas lighting installed for £17.00.

1875
Major fire was averted by the vigilance of the barmaid at the Narborough Arms.
New heating apparatus installed and new floor.

The Leadership Team The Leadership Team

1880
New windows installed costing £98.00 (recently 1 section cost almost £3,000.00).

1883
Church re-opened after new front was built.
In recent excavations, foundations were discovered that took the building almost to the existing iron railings.
As the foundation stone on the vestry/upper room extension is dated 1900 it seems reasonable to assume that the church was “turned around” to face School Lane.

1932
Robjohn Hall was opened.
