History

The church was formed in 1836, at the time in Wavertree there was only a small Methodist Chapel and one Episcopalian Church which only had 80 free sittings for the poor. It was a populous village of 2000 people and Mr. Sleigh (the founder) was shocked by the spiritual destitution.  He at once opened his own household and many others who were disposed to attend.  In October 1836 a large room was obtained and from its opening it was crowded.  This was very encouraging and in 1838 Mr. Sleigh proceeded to secure the means to erect a chapel for the congregation he had gathered.  Many liberal minded friends sympathized with him and the project went ahead.  He had the satisfaction of laying the foundation stone on 11th December 1838 and the work was completed by 1st October 1839, the day on which the chapel was opened and called ¡¯Trinity Chapel, Hunters Lane¡¯.  So started the church¡¯s long history in Wavertree.  We must give thanks to Almighty God for the wonderful work and witness of Mr. Sleigh on this district.
