Area staff across the Federation work with many different churches. Some of these workers have a remit for supporting ministry with children and young people. We have offered them the opportunity to be profiled here.
South West - Adrian Wyatt
I am the South West Area Support and Development Worker and I work 4 days a week. In my previous working life I was in the police for 30 years spending much of that time specialising in Child Protection and Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults.
Here, as someone who did not come to faith until their late 30s, I have a passion for finding ways to express the good news of Jesus in different ways, relevant to individuals and groups within our communities.
At present, with young people I am particularly involved in Film Clubs, (I have a real passion for film and its ability to communicate across different groups) the Lens Factor, (a photographic outreach idea in 4 churches) Messy Church, together with a number of tailored events across our Area including an African Café Church and exploring schools opportunities to engage with the 2015 Rugby World Cup.
North West - Annette Dickinson
I'm Annette Dickinson and the NW Youth and Children's Enabler.
I had been a churchgoer all my life but became a Christian 8 years ago.
These 9 years with Jesus have been the most exciting of my life, especially seeing my whole family come to Christ.
Everyday is different in my role with the NW churches, from completing DBS checks, receiving and sending children's Postal Bible School booklets, delivering resources, youth camp to hands-on Holiday Bible Clubs!
My heart is to see children and young people have a real relationship with the Lord Jesus. Working alongside congregations, ministers and children's workers these past 6 years has been a blessing to me and the fellowships feel like family.
My favourite Scripture and the one Pastor Chris Okpoti gave me at my baptism is Jer 29:11 'For I know the plans I have for you....'. these words still send shivers of excitement through me to be part of serving in the Kingdom of God for our Father and and His Son, Jesus Christ!
Congrational Federation in Scotland - Susan Durham
Hi, I’m Susan Durham and I’m currently serving the Congregational
Federation in Scotland as their Youth and Children’s Work Convenor.
I provide a link with the Youth and Children’s office in Manchester and support churches in their work with young people including the Child Friendly Church Award and coaching schemes. I meet up with the young people in the Core Team and Young Leader’s Support group who are based in Scotland at Area Council four times a year and at other occasions outwith this too. I am particularly passionate about the pastoral support for our young people and lend a listening ear whenever I can and am humbled by the way they support one another too.
We try to provide opportunities for our young people in their own churches but also in linking together and attending national events. Sometimes the first step is difficult.
I thoroughly enjoy getting alongside our young folk and continue to serve Lanark and Larkhall Congregational Churches as their Minister.
South West Midlands - Joy Howell
Hello! I’m Joy Howell and I’m the Children’s and Youth Work Coordinator for the South West Midlands Area. I have been in this role since November 2011 and prior to that most of my working life had been in Primary Education.
I have a passion for work with children and youth: I love to see them excited to learn about the things of God and even more to see them taking steps on their journey of faith. We have an awesome task in being part of building God’s Kingdom and I want to be able to help churches to do this using their own gifts & skills in a way that is relevant to their own community. In the SW Mids (as in many other areas) we have a wide range of congregations from tiny rural villages to inner-city, multi-ethnic Bristol churches and each one is unique.
Being hands on is what I enjoy the most so, as well as training and advising and DBS and a whole range of other “coordinating”, I also love to be invited as a visitor to lead children’s, youth, all-age, family events. Another passion is music and I particularly enjoy incorporating this into my work.
