Drum Workshop at WOW 2007

The conference theme is “Caring for Creation”. In the book of Genesis we read that God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. Today we look with concern at climate change. Some experts say we are entering a critical phase in human history. Others believe that their colleagues are exaggerating and that nature is strong enough to accommodate the changes. However, how do these changes affect the earth and its people?

We believe that God entrusted us with caring for creation. If creation is God’s gift to us, are we allowed to exploit nature? If we believe that God in Christ saved the world, does that include the whole of creation? What about justice? The poor have the right to struggle for a better life; at the same time the earth has limited capacity. Is economic justice in conflict with eco-justice? At Window on the World we will explore these questions and more. We will reflect on the way we understand God’s creation as well as ourselves. What is our Christian responsibility in the face of increasing environmental destruction, global warming, climate change and growing economic injustice?
Caring for Creation
Can we develop a lifestyle, economic policies and technologies which support a sustainable relationship between humanity and nature?

The main theme talks will be given by Revd Dr Hielke Wolters, the Director of the Justice, Diakonia and Responsibility for Creation programme of the World Council of Churches in Geneva, Switzerland. Hielke is a minister of the Protestant Church in the Netherlands and the former director of the ecumenical institute for development education (OIKOS) in Utrecht, the Netherlands. He is the author of several publications in the field of mission, faith and economy, and globalisation and sustainable development. Hielke will attend the conference with his wife Lia, also a minister, who will lead early morning worship.

Youth at WOW
All-age worship will be led by Revd Terry Jin. Terry is a minister of the Presbyterian Church of Korea who is currently serving as a CWM Mission Partner with the Congregational Federation.

Revd John Marsh, Moderator of General Assembly elect of the United Reformed Church, has provisionally agreed to chair the conference.
